3. Civil Services Examination (CSE) Stages

Preliminary Examination: An objective-type test consisting of two papers (General Studies and CSAT). It serves as a screening test.

Mains Examination: A written exam with nine papers, including Essay, General Studies, and Optional Subject papers. It tests the candidate’s academic knowledge and understanding of current issues.

Age Limit: Generally between 21 to 32 years, with age relaxations for reserved categories (SC/ST, OBC, etc.).

Number of Attempts: General category candidates get six attempts, OBC candidates nine, and SC/ST candidates have no limit until the age limit.

5. Syllabus Overview

Prelims: General Studies covers current events, history, geography, polity, economic and social development, environmental ecology, and general science. CSAT includes comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, and analytical ability.

Mains: Consists of four General Studies papers (covering Indian heritage, governance, technology, ethics, etc.), one essay paper, two papers on optional subjects, and two qualifying language papers.

Interview: Focuses on the candidate’s mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, and moral and ethical integrity.

How are the members of SPSC appointed? +

The State governor appoints the Chairman and other members of the SPSC. The Indian Constitution empowers the governor to determine their terms of service. How is the chairman appointed? +

The governor may appoint an acting chairman from the members of the SPSC in circumstances such as:

  • When the chairman's office is vacant.
  • If the chairman is unable to perform duties due to absence or other reasons.
